An anal fistula is a tract that often follows an abscess. Unlike piles or fissure, fistulas rarely resolve with creams alone. At Madeenaguda, we focus on careful examination, infection control and surgical planning that aims to heal the tract while protecting continence.
Symptoms
Intermittent pus or fluid discharge near the anus
History of anal abscess drainage
Recurrent swelling, pain or fever
Skin irritation from moisture
Evaluation
Clinical exam assesses external opening and possible internal communication. Imaging (for example MRI) may be advised for complex or recurrent fistulas. Planning balances healing vs sphincter preservation.
Treatment options
Antibiotics when active infection is present (not a standalone cure)
Seton placement in selected complex tracts
Fistulotomy for carefully chosen simple fistulas
Sphincter-preserving techniques (including laser-assisted options where appropriate)
Staged care for complex disease
There is no single guaranteed technique for every fistula. Recurrence risk and continence considerations are discussed before consent.
When to consult
Persistent discharge, recurrent abscess, or incomplete healing after drainage should be reviewed by a surgeon. Delayed care can lead to more complex tracts.
